Scilly birds
Many birds migrating back to Britain make their first landfall on the beaches of the Scilly Isles, where they fuel up after their long flight from Africa and the continent. Dunlin, sanderling, curlew and oystercatchers feed on the shore. Once fed and rested, the birds continue on to their breeding grounds, sometimes as far off as Greenland and Siberia. The beaks of the oystercatcher and curlew are ideal for feeding in the mud.
