Programme 3
Music and poetry as well as readings from James Fenton, Charlie Gillen and Wilbert Magill.
We open the programme with ‘Baltic Street’ taken from a new CD - ‘The Colour of Amber’ - by one of Scotland’s finest singers, Sylvia Barnes, Scots singer of the year in 2006. Sylvia is fond of the Scots tongue and her new CD is a mixture of old ballads and Scots poems by the Angus writer, Violet Jacob. Jackie explains that Kist presenter, Liam Logan, is taking a break from radio and wishes him all the best. Jim Fenton can write prose as well as poetry and he shares his memories of summers cutting peats with ‘The Flow’ from his book, ‘Thonner an Thon’; before we hear a tune from Shetland fiddler, Debbie Scott - ‘Island Boy’.
Charlie Gillen reflects on old women’s bicycles and buttermilk; and Wilbert Magill goes to the dancing in Carrowdore with Big Bertha, set to background music from ‘The Occasionals’, one of Scotland’s leading dance bands. Finally, Jackie tells us about two public meetings taking place to discuss the Ulster-Scots Academy - one in Regent House, the other in Ballymoney Town Hall.
