Riverbank raid
Life isn't always easy for the creatures of the Zambezi. A pair of pied kingfishers, working hard to fish for their chicks, spend long periods away from the nest. Living in isolation, the kingfishers don't have the advantage of lots of pairs of eyes looking out for trouble and sometimes their vigilance just isn't enough. Mongooses are a serious threat to all who nest on the riverbank, and once they are in the kingfisher burrow, the desperate flying tactics and sharp beaks of the parents have little impact. They can do nothing to save their chicks from predation and it's too late to nest again.
