In Confucian China, the close family unit forms the very foundation of society. But as the country leaps into modernisation, age-old traditions are being left behind. In part two, The End of the Line, veteran soldier Grandpa Ding tries to keep a tight grip on his family near the city of Xi'an in the northwest, while millet farmer Old Pan, in southwestern Guangxi, hopes his son will soon return to the ancestral village. But how realistic are their expectations? And can they succeed in resisting the tide of change?
