David Hemery
As former President of UK Athletics, David Hemery considered the role the "conscience of the sport". What does he make of the IOC's failure to ban Russia from the Rio Olympics?
Extratime's Rob Bonnet talks to David Hemery, former British Olympic gold medallist who won the 400 metres hurdles in the 1968 Mexico Games with a new world record, and yet had to ask a trackside reporter whether he'd actually come first. But the international ban on Russia's track and field athletes which prevents them from going to the Rio Olympics and the IOC's failure to extend that to the rest of the Russian team will have to be where we start. After all, in a distinguished career in sports governance, David Hemery spent four years as President of UK Athletics, a role he identified as being the "conscience of the sport".
