Peak District

Sammi Kinghorn and Matt Baker explore the Peak District, the first national park created by the transformative National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act of 1949.

It鈥檚 75 years since the transformative National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act of 1949 opened up large swathes of the British countryside for everyone. Sammi Kinghorn and Matt Baker explore the first national park created by this act - the Peak District.

Sammi finds out how Ethel Haythornthwaite, a passionate advocate for the countryside, was instrumental in the preservation of the Peak District. Sammi also visits a local bootmaker and gets to grips with the traditional methods, still used today, to make a pair of working boots.

Matt learns about the risks exploring our wild spaces with the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation as they look back on 60 years of saving lives in the national park. We also meet a farmer championing the call of the curlew on his land, whilst Tom looks to the future as he investigates some of the challenges facing our 15 national parks. And in the run-up to Christmas, Adam discovers how the turkey became the centrepiece of our festive feasts.
