The Royal Opera's staging of Offenbach's fantastical opera starring Juan Diego Fl贸rez as the alcoholic poet ETA Hoffmann in search of true love and artistic inspiration. The Tales of Hoffmann was the last work Offenbach ever wrote and he never heard it performed in the theatre. Later composers and impresarios added bits of their own, and it's only in recent years that productions such as this one Royal Opera staging have tried to get closer to what Offenbach actually wrote. Damiano Michieletto's staging is a riot of colour and magic, as Hoffmann relives his three disastrous love affairs - with a mechanical doll, a singer stricken with tuberculosis and a Venetian courtesan - and confronts his real and imagined demons.

Presented by Martin Handley in conversation with opera historian Sarah Lenton.
