A Surrealist Mixtape from Slauson Malone 1
Jennifer Lucy Allan celebrates the 100th anniversary of the surrealist manifesto with a mixtape from genre-bending musician and visual artist Jasper Marsalis aka Slauson Malone 1.
This month marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of a pair of surrealist manifestos. In Paris, a century ago, two rival groups - led in turn by Yvan Goll and Andr茅 Breton - were looking to the language and visuals of dreams and the subconscious to find artistic freedom. For Breton, the quest for art and culture was to 鈥渇ind absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern.鈥 Here at Late Junction, we鈥檝e set our minds (and drooping clocks) back to this landmark moment to explore the effect Surrealism has had on music, and to explore where a new generation of sound-makers might use its influence to take us next.
To headline the bill, musician and visual artist Slauson Malone 1 (aka Jasper Marsalis) shares a mixtape embodying what Surrealism means to him. Marsalis鈥 practice sits at the intersection of - and explores the blurry line between - art, music and performance. Pairing dreamy, textural, and genre-bending soundscapes with a personal and at times confrontational performance style, Marsalis鈥 work attempts to break the barrier between audience and performer. In the style of the Surrealists, the mixtape forms an 鈥楨xquisite Corpse鈥 of conflicting sounds and influences.
