Fulu Miziki鈥檚 mixtape

Verity Sharp shares a zero-waste mixtape from Afrofuturist collective Fulu Miziki, whose name means 鈥渕usic from the garbage鈥�. Plus new tracks from El Khat and Mamer.

September begins with Zero Waste Week, an invitation to come together as communities to tackle pollution by reducing rubbish. As this year鈥檚 campaign draws to a close, Verity Sharp considers what music born of a similar ethos might sound like, sharing the work of an exciting crop of artists who are finding inventive ways to repurpose materials for musical ends.

Headlining the episode is the Kinshasa-via-Marseille Afrofuturist collective Fulu Miziki, whose name literally means 鈥渕usic from garbage鈥�. The Congolese group designs, builds and plays instruments upcycled from rubbish - from guembris born out of computer casing, to jerrycan drum kits. Fresh off the release of their new EP, Mokano, their mixtape offers up favourite tracks showcasing their multifaceted musical taste.

Elsewhere in the show, we lend our ears to new infectious music from El Khat, a trio that, in the same spirit of Fulu Miziki, deploys one-of-a-kind instruments built from discarded materials; and we get inside an Underground Factory with Chinese guitarist Mamer, before plunging in the otherworldly sounds of The Space Lady's rock'n'roll covers. Plus field recordings from a Swiss recycling centre.
