In response this week Daljit chooses: The Song of Hiawatha in which Timothy West narrates the legendary tale of the native American warrior Hiawatha. And also, Daljit selects his August Poetry Extra Book of the Month: Joy in Service on Rue Tagore by Paul Muldoon.
The Song of Hiawatha is based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1855 epic. The poem relates the adventures of Hiawatha, son of the Ruler Of The Winds Of Heaven, who forges peace through his marriage to Minnehaha. Named Strong-Heart by his villagers, Hiawatha battles defeats mighty opponents, but mischief, famine and tragedy follow.
"By the shores of the Gitche Gumee,
By the shining Big-Sea-Water,
Stood the wigwam of Nokomis...."
Timothy West tells the legendary story of native American hero, Hiawatha.
