Tha an deugaire, Nuala NicDhòmhnaill à Achadh an Inbhir ann an iar thuath na h-Alba air a’ mhòr chuid dhe a beatha a chur seachad a’ strì airson an taic a bha a dhìth oirre mar chuideigin air a bheil autism. Tha i a-nis a’ feuchainn ri cùisean atharrachadh airson nach bi na h-aon duilgheadasan a bh’ aice fhèin aig òigridh eile, is i ag obair còmhla ri sgoiltean agus buidhnean anns a’ choimhearsnachd gus atharrachaidhean beaga a dhèanamh a chì Ulapul agus an sgìre mu thimcheall a’ toirt urram agus spèis do dhaoine air a bheil autism.

Fhuair Nuala spionnadh airson cùisean atharrachadh an dèidh dhi a bhith air turas a Chanada gu aon den chiad bhailtean a tha a’ toirt spèis do dhaoine air a bheil autism ann an Talamh an Èisg is i air làithean saora ann an 2019. Bha na h-atharrachaidhean beaga a rinn iad a’ dèanamh cùisean nas fhasa do dhaoine air a bheil autism agus bha e mìorbhaileach do Nuala seo fhaicinn.

Tha sinn a’ leantainn Nuala is i a’ coileanadh a h-amasan agus aig an aon àm a’ faighinn eòlas air a’ bhoireannach òg iongantach seo. Tha sinn a’ faighinn tuigse nas fheàrr air mar a tha i fhèin agus daoine eile air a bheil autism a’ faicinn an t-saoghail. Agus mar sin, tha sinn ag ionnsachadh dè as urrainn dhuinn fhìn a dhèanamh gus barrachd co-ionannachd a bhith anns na coimhearnsachdan againn.

Teenager Nuala MacDonald, from Acheninver in the north west of Scotland, has spent much of her life fighting for the support she needs as someone who is on the autistic spectrum. She now has plans to pave the way for change so that other youngsters do not face the same difficulties, as she works with schools and organisations to implement small changes in her community which will see Ullapool and the surrounding area become autism-friendly.

Nuala’s push for change was inspired by a trip to Canada's first autism–friendly town in Newfoundland, whilst on holiday in 2019. The simple changes they had made to make life easier for people with autism were great for Nuala to see.

We follow Nuala on her mission, and learn more about this remarkable young woman. We get a better understanding of the unique perspectives that she and others on the autistic spectrum experience, and in turn learn what we can all do as a society to make our communities more inclusive, and accommodating for all.
