Nicola Benedetti and the Edinburgh International Festival

Nicola Benedetti, current director of the EIF, tells the story of the festival since its foundation in 1947, with new and archive interviews and memorable Edinburgh performances.

Founded in 1947 the Edinburgh International Festival has attracted the biggest stars of the stage including Maria Callas, Sir Ian McKellen, Yehudi Menuhin, Margot Fonteyn, Pavarotti and - Nicola Benedetti, the current Director of the Festival. Notably not only the first female Director but also the first Scottish person to hold the position, Nicola tells the story of the Festival with the help of performers and commentators including Alan Cumming, James Naughtie, Abel Selaocoe, Karine Polwart, James MacMillan, Thea Musgrave, Ivan Fischer and Gustavo Dudamel. There are also archive interviews with Yehudi Menuhin and Kathleen Ferrier and previous directors Robert Ponsonby and John Drummond, and reminders of memorable Edinburgh performances of music by Mahler, Bruch, Tan Dun, MacMillan, Janacek, Stravinsky, Wagner and JS Bach.
