The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and conductor Andrew Manze perform a concert of music by Vaughan Williams, celebrating his pastoral inspiration and use of folk songs to create a distinctly British sound and style.

The SCO's leader Stephanie Gonley performs Vaughan Williams's much loved work for solo violin and orchestra, The Lark Ascending. It's a musical depiction of a bird on the wing, its song filling the air inspired by George Meredith's poem of the same name. Young musicians from the SCO String Academy join for Vaughan Williams five movement Concerto Grosso, written initially in 1950 for the Rural Music School strings programme. The concert ends with Vaughan Williams Symphony No 5, a hopeful, spiritual work written during the Second World War with musical themes taken from his opera The Pilgrim鈥檚 Progress.
