Sounds for a Midsummer鈥檚 Night
Verity Sharp picks a selection of tracks to celebrate the longest day of the year, from the urban sounds of Kate Carr鈥檚 walks along the Thames to hypnotic hymns by Old Saw.
Verity Sharp picks a selection of adventurous tracks to celebrate the longest day of the year, embracing the summer with open arms (and ears). Amongst the selections are a composition made from field recordings collected by Kate Carr during a walk along the Thames during the 2023 Summer Solstice; plus circular, hypnotic hymns from the new album by New England collective, Old Saw.
We鈥檒l head outdoors ourselves, rolling through the luminous grass of sound artist Ludwig Berger鈥檚 Garden Of Ediacara, a fictional place, imagined as existing 600 millions years ago, where various ecosystems coexist harmoniously. In the distance, the mysterious harmonies of a Gregorian chant-like piece from Julius Eastman鈥檚 The Holy Presence are coming nearer. And, as the sun eventually disappears, there鈥檚 time to dance to Azu Tiwaline and Forest Drive West's dubwise beats and the trance-inducing music of Sipaningkah, who draws on both his sonic heritage as Minangkabau, an ethnic group native of West Sumatra, as well as Western electro-acoustic traditions. And - who knows? - there might just be time for an appearance from 鈥渢he clamorous owl, that nightly hoots and wonders / At our quaint spirits鈥 before sleep takes hold.
