Schoenberg's Gurrelieder
Simon Rattle conducts the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, a starry international cast and massed choirs in a performance of Schoenberg's early 20th-century epic, Gurrelieder.
Ahead of Simon Rattle and Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra's visit to the 麻豆社 Proms this September, a chance to hear their acclaimed performance of an early 20th-century epic, recorded at the Isarphilharmonie, Munich, in April this year.
Appointed chief conductor of the celebrated BRSO at the beginning of the 2023/2024 season, Rattle chose to go big for this, the orchestra's 75th anniversary gala concert.
Schoenberg's Gurrelieder, gigantic, richly romantic and lyrical, takes its audience on a journey into a unique and all-embracing sound landscape. It's based on an ancient Danish saga of illicit love, jealousy and murder, set at the castle of Gurre in north Zealand.
Tonight鈥檚 performance features an international, all-star vocal line-up and massed choral forces, as well a colossal orchestra with a gargantuan percussion section (with exotica such as 'large iron chains' and a ratchet), ten horns, seven trombones, 25 wind players and nearly 70 string players, including four harps.
