Tom Service talks to the star tenor Nicky Spence and plays the best classical music, from familiar to hidden gems. He also finds out whether metronomes are a blessing or a curse, and talks to the American composer Nico Muhly about his latest work, To the Body.
09:40
Tom Service talks to the star tenor Nicky Spence about his formative years growing up in Newcastle and Dumfries, and they discuss the accessibility of opera both for young performers entering the profession and the audiences that they reach. Tom also asks Nicky about his advocacy of music education, and Nicky invites Tom to take part in their exclusive performance of Noel Coward's song, Any Little Fish, by making various animal noises!
11:00
Are metronomes a blessing or a curse? Tom tries to eumulate Pierre-Laurent Aimard's performance of Bach's Prelude in C minor, BWV.847, by taking a metronome into his practice room. He also talks to Adrian Church of the Musical Museum in Brentford, about the invention and mechanics of the metronome, which seems to be a surprisingly late discovery in music history. With the help of percussionist Catherine Ring, he finds out how metronomes can really help musicians, both in private practice and ensemble work.
11:30
Tom talks to the American composer Nico Muhly about his latest work, a piece for voices, instruments and electronics called To the Body. It is a vast and moving work, in ten panels, to accompany the jaw-dropping images of Yu Hong's exhibition at the church of Abbazia della Misericordia in Venice, and it takes Buxtehude's cantatas, membra Jesu Nostri, as its starting point, meditating on the wounds of Jesus.
