But… what is Shalimar?
Terry in Belfast has a poser about the Johnny Cash song, 40 Shades of Green: what, exactly, is Shalimar?
“I was listening to that lovely song, 40 Shades of Green,” says Terry in Belfast. “But there is one word in it that puzzles many people: Shalimar.”
“Where does that come in?” Sean asks. “Is it a place? 'Where the breeze is sweet as Shalimar and there’s forty shades of green...'”
“I think Shalimar,” says Olive in Belfast, “is a tree which has a lovely sweet scent.”
“To put you out of your misery,” says Terry in Belfast, “according to Johnny Cash, Shalimar was the name of the first perfume he bought his wife.”
“I have some more information for you about Shalimar perfume,” says Sheila. “It was brought out in the 1920s, and it was called the Bad Girl's perfume. It was loved by the flapper girls. In those days it was said that there were three things that ladies never did - smoked, dance the tango, or wear Shalimar. I have a bottle.”
“Sheila,” Sean says, “you’re my type of girl!”
