Crime & punishment - is jail too often the easy answer?

The prison population here is growing - up almost 13% according to the last reported figures - there's also been a sharp increase of 11 % in the number of people being held on remand - the highest level it has been over the last eight years.
Why are these figures rising? And what are the main reasons people end up in prison? Is it evidence of a more violent society? Is poor education a factor? And what about mental health? - is that a key contributor?
Should we be investing more in prison prevention and also in alternatives to prison?
