South Africa (from Kwaito to 3 Step and beyond)
Jamz traces the lineage of South African dance music, speaking to some key figures from the scene including Atmos Blaq, Kid Fonque, Desire Marea, Jackie Queens, and more.
In Jamz Supernova’s Global Sounds, Jamz dives into a music scene from around the world to uncover a place's unique identity and music. She speaks to artists and creatives to find out what their particular scene looks, sounds and feels like on the ground.
In this episode, Jamz traces the lineage of South Africa's dance music styles and celebrates all the wonderful music South Africa has given to the world. Jamz speaks with one of the hottest artists in South Africa, Atmos Blaq, who is spearheading a new sound known as 3 Step, and catches up with Defected Records A&R, Kid Fonque gives insight on how the scene has thrived over the past 25 years. Also, Jamz gets a broader look at South Africa's cultural landscape with words from DJ, Record Collector and Journalist Attiyah Khan, Search Festival booker Aaron Peters and cultural curators Kamva Collective. Plus a breakdown of the genres that have defined South Africa's dance music lineage from vocalist and artist manager Jackie Queens.
Across the four-part series, Jamz will be exploring themes and music from South Africa (from Kwaito to Amapiano), South Asia (tracing the roots through the diaspora on dancefloors across the world), French Creole (Martinique, Guadeloupe and surrounding areas - looking at how the music has transported, been remixed and is being celebrated in the diasporas in Europe), and Barranquilla Carnival: Colombia (taking a deep dive into one of Colombia's most important folkloric celebrations, and one of the biggest carnivals in the world).
Jamz Supernova is a stalwart of the UK music scene and a vital voice in championing the best in diverse, new music and cultures from the UK and beyond. You can also catch Jamz every Saturday afternoon on 6 Music (1pm-3pm), playing the best in global club sounds, alternative RnB, broken beat and leftfield electronica.
