Julian Joseph pays tribute to Ahmad Jamal, a titan of jazz (or as Jamal preferred to call it, American Classical Music) who has died at the age of 92. Playing landmark recordings and rarities, Julian explores Jamal’s incredible career, from his friendship with Miles Davis to his million-selling album, Live at the Pershing. A lifelong innovator, Ahmad Jamal has influenced musicians from across the genres, including hip hop where he has been sampled by everyone from De La Soul to Nas.
Throughout the show we hear highlights from an interview Julian recorded with Ahmad Jamal in 2002, full of stories from his early years growing up in Pittsburgh. We also hear from contemporary pianists Robert Glasper, Hiromi and Vijay Iyer who offer their reflections on Ahmad Jamal’s timeless genius.
