Coronation Bank Holiday Special

A sequence for the coronation of King Charles III, including some of his favourite pieces, plus coronation music down the ages.

On Coronation Bank Holiday, a mixtape that includes some of His Majesty King Charles III鈥檚 favourite recordings, as chosen by him for 麻豆社 Radio 3鈥檚 Private Passions in 2019 (Haydn鈥檚 Cello Concerto in C with Jacqueline du Pr茅) and for a programme with the Hospital Broadcasting Association in 2021 (Charles Trenet鈥檚 La Mer, Miriam Makeba鈥檚 Click Song, and Old Blind Dogs' Bennachie). There鈥檚 also music composed for coronations down the ages, from George II in 1727 (Handel鈥檚 Coronation Anthem 鈥楾he King shall Rejoice鈥�) to Elizabeth II in 1953 (Herbert Howells鈥� 鈥楤ehold O God our Defender鈥�), plus Elgar's own recording of his Pomp and Circumstance March no. 4.
