The untold story of Ugandan migrants
Ankur Desai delves into his family history to find out about his Ugandan heritage. He speaks to other British Asians discovering their East African roots.
From running successful businesses to putting masala mogo on the menu, East African Asians have made their mark on the UK. 50 years ago, around 80,000 South Asians living in Uganda were forced to flee their homes in just 90 days. Around 40,000 of them came to the UK with nothing but 拢55 in their pocket. Many of them witnessed traumas and faced hardship trying to leave and rebuild their lives in a foreign country, but most have never really spoken about the things they witnessed, until now.
Ankur Desai talks to his mum about what happened in Uganda and speaks to other young British Asians discovering their Ugandan backgrounds and hearing their relatives' stories for the first time. Ankur celebrates the achievements of East African Asians and explores how the next generation are turning their parents' traumas into success stories.
