James Joyce and the Lass of Aughrim

Celebrating Ulysses at 100 by revisiting a very special 1982 documentary, featuring Ted Hickey looking at Joyce's relationship with traditional songs and more

In 1982, celebrating one hundred years since James Joyce鈥檚 birth, 麻豆社 Radio Ulster commissioned the documentary James Joyce and the Lass of Aughrim.

Written by Ted Hickey and produced by Paul Muldoon, the programme looks at the traditional songs scattered throughout Joyce鈥檚 work, including the performance of five of these songs by Ted Hickey, accompanied by Colin Higgins on guitar and Trevor Stewart on concertina and uileann pipes.

This year, the centenary of the publication of Joyce鈥檚 best known work Ulysses in 1922, has allowed 麻豆社 Radio Ulster and The Culture Cafe the opportunity to revisit this documentary for a new audience.

We'll hear the documentary in full, preceded by an in-depth discussion hosted by Marie-Louise Muir and featuring original producer, poet and Princeton professor Paul Muldoon, along with Nora Hickey M鈥橲ichili - Ted鈥檚 daughter, and director of Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris.
