LSO St Luke's Artist Focus: Gareth Davies
Flautist Gareth Davies and Michael McHale play music by William Grant Still and Reinecke, recorded in May at LSO St Luke's and presented by Hannah French.
Hannah French presents the third of four concerts focusing on top international wind and brass stars, and recorded in May at LSO St Luke's. Today the light shines on flautist Gareth Davies with pianist Michael McHale, who perform a programme of watery-themed and bucolic music.
The recital starts with Debussy's solo work for flute, telling of the melancholic nymph, Syrinx. That is followed by Richard H Walthew's Idyll, full of flowing melodies and birdsong. Electra Perivolaris's Glen Sannox Song was inspired by the landscape and musical traditions of the Isle of Arran, melodic lines tracing the bends and curves of the Glen Sannox river. The watery theme continues with William Grant Still's Songs for flute and piano, and the concert ends with Carl Reinecke's Undine Sonata - a musical telling of the fairy-tale Undine, the water nymph.
