Classic Album of a Different Kind
Gary West introduces us to one of his favourite albums of the 1980s, from the Breton band, Den, as well as top tunes from the solo and band scenes of Scotland and New Zealand.
Gary West brings you more high-end music of the bagpipe, including three tracks from a seminal album of the 1980s, Just Around the Window, from Breton folk band, Den, featuring the wonderful highland and uillean piping of Patrick Molard alongside the virtuosic fiddling of his brother, Jacky. There’s also a trip to the South Island of New Zealand to take in a set from one of the fathers of 20th century piping there, Bill Boyle, as well as a performance from one of the pipe bands he helped to nurture, the Canterbury Caledonia from Christchurch. There’s a double header visit back to the Northern Meeting in Inverness of 2019, to take in two of the winning performances from that year, courtesy of Stuart Liddell and Connor Sinclair, and with Inveraray and District leading the way in the pipe band championships table this season, there’s a reminder of their sound from their first year in the top flight, 2010.
