Tha oidhirp as ùr air nochdadh sa Spàinn airson eachdraidh bhrùideil na dùthcha fo dheachdaireachd an t-Seanalair Franco aithneachadh. Thathar a’ tomhas gu bheil na mìltean de chuirp fhathast ann am mòr-uaighean, nacheil comharraichte, air feadh na dùthcha, de dhaoine a chaidh a’ mhurt aig àm a Chogaidh Shìobhalta is às a dhèidh. New efforts are under way in Spain to address its brutal past under the dictatorship of General Franco. It’s estimated the remains of thousands of people killed during the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath are buried in unmarked mass graves throughout the country. Andrew Mackinnon reports on how these graves are being exhumed in an attempt to acknowledge this dark episode of the nation’s past and provide redress to the families of those who were killed. Andreas Wolff is in northern Sweden where there are concerns about the impact of metal and mineral mining on the environment and culture of the indigenous Sami people. The mining companies say that the mines offer employment and are important to the promotion of a greener economy.

An Spàinn

An Spàinn
Tha an Spàinn an-dràsta a' coimhead air ais gu dlùth ris an eachdraidh aice, gu àm a' Chogaidh Shìobhalta, nuair a bha an deachdaire, an t-Seanalair Franco, aig an stiùir. Tha barrachd dhaoine na bha a-riamh ag iarraidh gun tèid uaighean mòra bhon àm fhosgladh, agus gun tèid dust an fheadhainn a chaidh a mharbhadh le feachdan Franco a thiodhlacadh gu ceart. Bha Franco a' riaghladh na Spàinn bho 1939 gu 1975, agus lean an ceannais aige gu bàs na mìltean dhaoine a sheas na aghaidh, le mòran dhiubh air an tiodhlacadh còmhla ann an uaighean mòra.

Às dèidh bàs Franco ann an 1975, ghluais an Spàinn chun deamocrasaidh a th' aice an-diugh, ach leis an sin, chaidh aontachadh gun deigheadh dìochuimhneachadh mu na h-eucoirean a ghabh àite. A-nis, tha cuid de cheannardan poilitigeach agus luchd-iomairt airson dèiligeadh ri na eucoirean sa. Tha iad seo agus teaghlaichean an fheadhainn a bhàsaich air a bhith ag iomairt fad bhliadhnachan airson barrachd urram a thoirt dhaibh, agus aire a thogail mu na h-uabhasan a ghabh àite.

Spain

Spain
Calls have been growing in recent years for Spain to re-examine its Franco-era history, and for mass graves from the time of the Civil War to be exhumed, and the remains to be properly buried. General Franco ruled over Spain as dictator from 1939 until 1975, and his regime led to the killings of thousands of opponents, many of whom were buried in shallow mass graves.

After Franco's death in 1975, Spain began a transition to the democracy that we know today, which included the national Pact of Forgetting. This allowed for new democratic processes to grow, while ignoring many of the injustices committed during Franco’s regime. Now, some political leaders and campaigners want to  these crimes formally addressed. Many family members of those killed during the Civil War have campaigned for years for greater respect for the deceased, and better awareness of the atrocities which were committed.

An t-Suain

An t-Suain
'S i an t-Suain aon dhe na dùthchannan mèinnearachd as motha san Roinn ·¡Ã²°ù±è²¹ agus 91% de chlach-iarainn na mòr-thìr aice. Chaidh baile Khiruna a thogail air sgàth na mèinne agus a-nis tha meadhan a' bhaile air fad a' gluasad dà mhìle dhan ear air sgàth mar a tha a' mhèinn a' dèanamh adhartais. Ach tha buachaillean nam fiadh Lochlannach ag ràdh gu bheil droch bhuaidh aig mèinnearachd air an cuid beòshlaint, an àrainneachd agus cultar dùthchasach nan Sami. Faisg air baile Jokkmokk, tha a' chompanaidh mèinnearachd Bhreatanach Beowulf an dòchas mèinn ùr fhosgladh agus thathar an dùil ri co-dhùnadh air cead-obrach a dh'aithgheàrr. Tha beachdan ionadail air an sgaradh. Ach tha companaidhean mèinnearachd ag argamaid gu bheil iad a' cur ri atharrachadh gu eaconomaidh uaine.

Sweden

Sweden
Sweden is one of Europe's leading mining nations and is estimated to have 91% of the continent's iron ore. The town of Kiruna was built as a result of a mine and now the whole town centre has to move two miles to the East because of the advance of the mine. But reindeer herders are saying the mining has a detrimental effect on their livelihoods, the environment and the indigenous Sami culture. Near the town of Jokkmokk, British mining company Beowulf are hoping to open a new mine and a decision on their concession is due soon with local opinions divided. But mining companies argue that they contribute to a green economy transformation.
