Before invading Ukraine, President Putin pointed to the affinity between Russians and Ukrainians through some of their shared history and above all through the Russian Orthodox Church. And yet, in such a strongly religious country as Ukraine, not all worshippers are Christian, not all Christians are Russian Orthodox believers, and many Russian Orthodox faithful identify as Ukrainian.
