America and the world was shocked by the killing of George Floyd at the hands of police in the US city of Minneapolis on 25 May 2020. The global reaction prompted a reckoning on race - with companies promising action and investment to tackle racism, pay inequality and lack of diversity in the workplace. Corporate giants from Walmart to Sony and PayPal have pledged millions of dollars for social impact funds. On Talking Business Weekly, we assess what progress has been made one year on. We hear from Emmy-nominated Baratunde Thurston, former advisor to the Obama White House and author of How To Be Black, and Roger Ferguson, former CEO of $1 trillion US pension fund TIAA and a board member at tech giant Alphabet. We ask why boardrooms remain overwhelmingly white. There are only 4 black CEOs running America's Fortune 500 firms and no black chairman, CEOs or financial chiefs running Britain's FTSE 100 firms, while black workers are overrepresented in low-wage, entry-level jobs.
