Stuart revisits the jazz trumpeter鈥檚 spiritual and joyous 1964 album A New Perspective. A milestone in Byrd鈥檚 career, the record innovatively uses a seven-voice gospel choir in a jazz context. A first for the time and with an absence of scat, the album boasts pure and soaring wordless vocals backed by jazzy guitar, impassioned trumpet and bluesy piano courtesy of legend Herbie Hancock. Byrd described his creative process as 鈥渕odern jazzmen approaching a hymnal with respect and great pleasure鈥�.
