Stephen Hough joins Alpesh Chauhan and the 麻豆社 Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Beethoven鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 2. Also works by George Walker, Richard Strauss, and Jay Capperauld.
Live from 麻豆社 Proms
Presented by Kate Molleson, live from City Halls, Glasgow
Beethoven鈥檚 economically scored Second Piano Concerto 鈥 written before his First and among the earliest of his works performed in concert halls today 鈥 looks both backwards to Haydn and Mozart and forwards to Beethoven鈥檚 future innovation and rhythmic fascination.
Tonight鈥檚 麻豆社 commission is from Glasgow-based composer Jay Capperauld. Expressed in the context of the recurring 24-hour process that regulates our sleeping patterns, Circadian Refrains (172 Days Until Dawn) is Capperauld鈥檚 response to the cyclical nature of lockdown, enforced as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Continuing the theme of mass upheaval, the 麻豆社 Scottish Symphony Orchestra closes with Strauss鈥檚 devastating Metamorphosen. Written for 23 solo strings during the final months of the Second World War (which Strauss described as 鈥榯he most terrible period of mankind鈥), it quotes from the Funeral March of Beethoven鈥檚 鈥楨roica鈥 Symphony (No. 3).
