Roundhouse Generations

Ahead of the 6 Music Festival in Camden, Gemma Cairney talks to Guy Garvey and Nubya Garcia about their musical history with the Roundhouse venue.

Back in the 60s and early 70s, the Roundhouse was famous for hosting wild parties and launching the early careers of some of the biggest names in rock 鈥榥鈥 roll. The likes of The Doors, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie all played legendary shows there. In July 1967 the Roundhouse hosted a conference of radical thinkers called 鈥淭he Dialectics of Liberation: Towards a Demystification of Violence鈥. The speakers included Beat poet Allan Ginsberg and Black Power leader Stokely Carmichael who raised the roof with his fierce advocacy of Black Power and a call for a new way of fighting individual and institutional racism.

A decade later, a new generation of artists took to the stage as the punk movement gathered momentum 鈥 The Ramones, The Damned, The Stranglers and The Clash were all on the bill in a single year in 1976.

After reopening in 2006 following a major redevelopment, the Roundhouse has seen a new generation of artists coming through the doors via workshops, masterclasses creative projects and performances including Kate Tempest, Kojey Radical, Little Simz and George The Poet.

For Roundhouse Generations, Gemma Cairney will be joining Guy Garvey who played a residency there with Elbow, and saxophonist Nubya Garcia who grew up in Camden and used the Roundhouse as part of her early musical development, to talk about their personal relationships with the venue. We'll also hear from some of the generations of musicians past and present who have passed through including Moses Boyd, Michael Kiwanuka, Pink Floyd, The Clash and Kate Tempest.
