Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Paul Oxley, vicar of St Mark鈥檚 in Milton Keynes:

This weekend was my in-law鈥檚 44th wedding anniversary. Their marriage is full of generosity and faithfulness, but one of my favourite things about the way they walk through life together is their complicated relationship with the thermostat.聽

I like to watch the action unfold from a perfect viewing point near the kitchen kettle.聽聽

Periodically, Dad will wonder past, shiver, look accusingly at the nearest radiator and crank up the heat in an eternal search for climactic comfort. A few minutes later, Mum will bustle past, glare equally accusingly at the dial and wind the switch down, wondering aloud why on earth it鈥檚 so hot in here!

聽I鈥檓 sure they are not the only couple who does this鈥

鈥ecause we all know small actions can make a massive difference!

I was reminded of this last week when I met a lady, now in the autumn of her youth (and sat in a very warm front lounge!)

I was interviewing her about her life hoping to catch all her stories about the women鈥檚 refuge she opened 5 decades ago to protect and provide shelter for women and children suffering abuse in the home. Today that work has become a great local charity employing a wide range of staff and experts.聽

I asked if she鈥檇 ever expected so many people to be helped when she started all those years ago. 鈥淥h no!鈥 she replied, 鈥淲e were just trying to do our little bit to help鈥

聽Ending our interview, perhaps fearing unscripted conversation with a vicar, she announced that she wasn鈥檛 religious. I considered the impact for good she鈥檚 had on the world around her. I remembered Jesus鈥 stories about helping people you find on the side of life鈥檚 road, no matter who they are. I recalled bits of the Bible which make it clear God is far more interested in kindness and love than he is in church attendance.聽

聽I told her that although she might not be religious, I鈥檓 pretty sure she is a saint!聽

聽Let鈥檚 be honest. The atmosphere can seem a little frosty and overwhelming sometimes. Maybe a few more of us with the courage to take little steps, crank up the levels of kindness, and commit to doing our little bit will make the world a better place?聽

聽I鈥檓 up for giving it a shot.
