MLAs send stark message to Secretary of State Karen Bradley - pay victims their money now.
It's been another week of anger, frustration and and distress for victims of historical institutional abuse in Northern Ireland. Their hopes of receiving compensation were dashed when the Secretary of State said she wouldn't bring the necessary legislation to Parliament. Instead, Karen Bradley referred the issue to the local political parties to deal with as part of the current Stormont talks. Victims accused her of using them as political football. At yesterday's Balmoral Show, Ms Bradley faced questions from the media, including the Nolan Show reporter Nicola Weir. Last night, Karen Bradley changed her tune, after receiving a letter from the local party leaders urging her to push ahead with compensation payments. She now says she is prepared to consider legislation if it's the best and quickest way. But Karen Bradley says she does need some answers first from the political parties. Stephen spoke to Alliance Party leader Naomi Long, SDLP leader Colum Eastwood, Margaret McGuckin from the group Survivors and Victims of Institutional Abuse and we took your calls.
Also on the programme, this morning we gave you a chance to hear from some of the candidates that are standing for the European Elections. Joining Stephen this morning was Green Party's Clare Bailey, Robert Hill from UKIP NI, Independent candidate Jane Morrice and Independent candidate Neil McCann.
