Health service, care packages, and should we lower the voting age?
Nolan exclusive – a disused hospital with no patients that's costing our health service - that's you - more than £400,000 and counting.
The Nolan Show has discovered under a Freedom of Information request that it has cost over £400,000 for round the clock security at a hospital that's been closed for a year and a half. The former Tyrone County Hospital in Omagh shut for good in June 2017. But 18 months on the Western Trust revealed it has paid out £410,000 to a security firm to protect the site - why? Because according to them there's still high value equipment inside. The Trust says it has a duty of care to protect the public and insure no one breaks into the now vacant buildings on the 20 acre site - but why is it taking so long to put it on the open market and is it value for money? Stephen got reaction from SDLP health spokesperson Mark H Durkan, Joe McCusker from Unison and we took you calls.
Also on the programme, yesterday we heard from Rodney. His 91 year old mother is currently in the South West acute hospital. He says that despite her being able to go home she can't due to a shortage of care providers. Stephen spoke to UUP MLA for Fermanagh and South Tyrone Rosemary Barton as we reveal figures on how many patients in Western Trust currently in hospital, fit to go home, but waiting on care package.
And, should the age of voting be lowered in Northern Ireland ahead of the next election? It is being considered by the Welsh Assembly, and with the ever changing political climate both here and the rest of the UK - is it a good idea? Stephen got the views of commentator Nelson McCausland and activist Scott Moore.
