Synopsis
On a Christmas night, Conrad, an obscure Viennese painter, rebels against misery. Unlucky in love and society, he can’t take it any longer. During a deep crisis of despair, his physician appears to him in the guise of a devil. He offers him a magical object, his silver bell, each ringing of which will make him rich in abundance, while causing the death of an innocent. Upon waking, bewitched Conrad strikes the bell: gold flows but the dead are already collapsed on his doorstep.
