Is cash the best medicine for the ills of the developing world?
Is cash the best medicine for the ills of the developing world?
What's the best, and the most efficient way to deliver foreign aid to the developing world. In health, education and agricultural programmes? What about cash? Why not give money to the most deprived - to individuals rather than governments or NGOs - and let them work out their own solutions. A year-long experiment in Rwanda has found that the most efficient way to raise living standards and help people out of poverty is to give them cash. Presenter Roisin McAuley discusses the effectiveness of aid with Siobhan Hanley from Self Help Africa, Tim Magowan, former director of Tearfund, and the Reverend Dr Paul Bailie who leads Mission Africa.
