"We need our coaches!" - children plead with Dept of Education to not cut funding for a school sports programme.
Pupils from a primary school in Newry are pleading with the permanent secretary at the Dept. of Education to keep funding a sports programme at their school. Last week it was confirmed that the school鈥檚 curriculum sports programme is to end. The scheme provided primary schools with a coach from either the GAA or Irish Football Association, employing more than 50 coaches. But the Dept. of Education said it could not make further funding available due to "pressures on the education budget". Vinny spoke to Kevin Donaghy, principal of St Ronan's Primary School.
Also on the programme, equal pay for equal work - that's the call from a local youth charity. They want everyone over 18 to be set on the same national minimum wage instead of different amounts depending on your age. This follows the budget announcement for the Chancellor that the minimum wage for over 25 year olds would reach 拢8.21 in April 2019. Those 18-20 years old, will be set at 拢6.15, and 21-24 years old, 拢7.70. Some argue that as the cost of living is the same for a 19-year-old as a 25 year old there should not be a disparity in pay. Vinny got the views of commentators Irwin Armstrong and Bumper Graham.
And, the 麻豆社 is reporting that 34 victims of human trafficking have been rescued in NI in the first 6 months of this year. That's almost as many as were rescued in the whole of last year. Last night, a hard-hitting 麻豆社 drama told the story of one woman who was trafficked to Belfast and forced into sex work. 'Doing Money' was screened on 麻豆社 Two last night. It tells the story of Ana, a young Romanian woman kidnapped in London and sold to a gang who force her into sex work in 'pop up' brothels in Belfast. Vinny spoke to Detective Super Richard Campbell.
All that and more on the biggest show in the country.
