A billion-pound budget sweetener - is it a good news story for NI?
Chancellor Philip Hammond declared that the budget would be for the "the strivers, the grafters and the carers".
Yesterday the last budget before Brexit was announced and the Chancellor has said it will mean additional spending of 拢320m for Northern Ireland government departments in 2021. Phillip Hammond said there would be "larger sums to come" as a result of a forthcoming spending review. He also approved a city deal for the Belfast region which will mean 拢350m of additional funding over 15 years and 拢2 million one-off payment to help with the impact of the Primark fire in Belfast city centre. So was it a good budget for NI? Stephen spoke to 麻豆社 NI Economics and Business Editor John Campbell, Irish News journalist Allison Morris and commentator Nelson McCausland.
Also on the programme, the Chancellor Philip Hammond declared that the budget would be for the "the strivers, the grafters and the carers" as he took advantage of better-than-expected tax revenues to promise a 拢30 billion boost in public spending by 2024. And, it's 25 years to the day since the Greysteel massacre. Eight people died after loyalist gunmen opened fire in the Rising Sun Bar. They were John Burns, Moira Duddy, Joe McDermott, Victor Montgomery, James Moore, John Moyne, Stephen Mullan, and Karen Thompson. The killings were admitted by the UFF - a cover name for the UDA. It was, they said, in retaliation for the Shankill Road bombing a week beforehand. Adrian McAuley was the first paramedic on the scene of the massacre. He told Stephen what he remembers of that day.
