Straight Outta Compton

When NWA released Straight Outta Compton, 30 years ago, it helped create what came to be known as gangsta rap. Huey looks into the legacy of what is still a controversial album.

When NWA released Straight Outta Compton, 30 years ago, it helped create what came to be known as Gangsta Rap. It still remains one of the most controversial albums of all time, with most of the tracks unplayable on the radio, and those that can be played have to be heavily censored. Regardless of the controversy around it, the album is undeniably a hip hop classic, often imitated but rarely, if ever, bettered.

On the 30th anniversary of its release, Huey looks at the albums influences and its legacy, playing tracks by World Class Wreckin' Cru, Charles Wright, The Watts Prophets, Kendrick Lamar, Kamasi Washington and many more.
