Gremlins, Goonies and Ghostbusters - Screens of the 80s
Film critic Mark Kermode invites you to go back to the future for a feast of film music from the 1980s with the 麻豆社 Concert Orchestra and Capital Voices conducted by Richard Balcombe.
The 1980s: ten rich years of history that gave us big hair, big earrings, big shoulder pads and the first mobile phone - and that was pretty big as well.
On the small screen, we were introduced us to the Watts from Walford, the Simpsons from Springfield and the Trotters from Peckham. Whilst on the big screen, we encountered the Blues Brothers, Batman, a bunny boiler and a strange bunch of parapsychologists called the Ghostbusters. Comedy, drama, adventure, romance - all genres were here. We wept during E.T., sniggered in Naked Gu,; grooved to Dirty Dancing, cringed at the Gremlins and held our breath during Indiana Jones. We really did have the time of our lives.
Tonight's concert includes music by the film world's greatest composers who provided the soundtracks to the 80s' finest cinema - including Maurice Jarre, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, Danny Elfman, Dave Grusin, Alan Silvestri and Jerry Goldsmith.
During the interval, Gary Davies recalls great television moments of the 80s - including EastEnders, royal weddings, the Berlin Wall and who shot JR?
First broadcast in August 2018.
