Woman's Lab: Dating
Woman's Lab investigates dating, Libby Hall's first play, Harriett Baldwin, writer and solo parent of twin girls Emma Brockes, plus how many hoops can you hula?
Womans Lab is back, and this time exploring the world of dating. Manchester is the most single place in the UK. So we sent Womans Lab to the rescue. Today we meet the first of our singles - Shelly, 44, an entrepreneur who was paired with presenter Gia Milinovich.
How many hoops can you hula with? 1? What about 8?! Mariam and Ashleigh, members of the all-female hula hooping troop Marawa's Majorettes join us to show off their skills and tell us about their performance at Somerset House next weekend.
Libby Hall is 16 and is to have her first play performed at the Salford Arts Theatre this week. She discusses her inspiration, Shelagh Delaney, who at 18, and also from Salford, wrote Taste of Honey, regarded as one of the defining plays of the 1950s working-class and feminist cultural movements.
South Sudan is the world's newest country and also one of the poorest. A civil war has been raging there for years affecting all aspects of life in the country, particularly education. Many girls don't go to school, and 1 in 3 are married by the time they're 18. The Minister for Africa, Harriett Baldwin, recently visited the country and met some of the girls who are benefitting from millions of pound of UK aid which is being used to help keep them in school for longer. She joins Jane to talk about what she saw on her visit.
In her new book "An Excellent Choice" Emma Brockes uses her own story to examine how and why an increasing number of women are using fertility treatments in order to become parents-and are doing it on their own. She reveals the panic and joy her solo path to motherhood has brought her.
