Pause For Thought
Matt Woodcock, Church of England Pioneer Minister and Mission Supporter in the Diocese of York:
It’s dog collar off and my precious England 1990 World Cup shirt on tomorrow night. I’ll be perched in front of the biggest screen in the rowdiest pub in my parish, roaring us on against Belgium. It’s fair to say that I am infected with a serious case of World Cup fever. It’s all I can think, talk and tweet about. I can’t resist the constant daily diet of outrageous players’ haircuts, barmy team coaches, VAR controversies and grumpy TV pundits.
The football isn’t bad either.
For me though, it’s the fans who are giving the World Cup its real heart and
identity. Those wonderful Japan
supporters clearing up their rubbish from the stadium after the game.  The hard up Peruvian family saving up for
years to get to Russia just for the joy of being near their team outside in the
fanzone.
Every day seems to generate another inspiring, heartwarming tale of kindness,
commitment and camaraderie. It’s a sermon writer’s dream.
England’s captain fantastic Harry Kane seems to personify the spirit. He’s a refreshingly different kind of
football general.  A calm, unassuming
man, preferring to lead by example. Usually by knocking loads of goals in.
Harry showed unusual qualities even as a young boy. Trials with big clubs meant
he often couldn't play for the school team. But when they reached a cup final
and he was available, his response was selfless.  He insisted on being a substitute, saying it
would unfair to drop the lad who'd played in the previous games.
Harry’s story reminds me that one of the biggest challenges of the Christian
journey is to avoid just talking a good faith.Â
To not simply ‘love with words or speech, but with actions and in
truth,’ as St John put it. Admittedly my skills can be Ronaldo-like when it
comes to verbalising the teachings of Jesus. But putting them into practice? Sometimes I
too often get stuck on the subs bench.
Thank heavens, then, that every morning offers a new opportunity to strap my boots
on and make a difference. As for England’s World Cup chances - well they’re
making a believer out of me.
After far too many years of hurt, I think Harry and the boys can finally bring
our pain to an end. I’m certainly
praying so.
