Pause for Thought
From the Reverend Richard Coles:
听
Someone told me of a lady
in her nineties who was devastated by the loss of her dog. After church she
said to the vicar, 鈥淲ill I see Milly in heaven?鈥, and the vicar said, 鈥淩uth,
dogs don鈥檛 go to heaven鈥, to which she replied, 鈥渢hen Ruths don鈥檛 go to
church,鈥 and never came again.
A delicate matter, which Noel may have encountered.听 When I am asked what heaven is like, I try to
tailor my answer to the person asking the question, which can mean anything
from 鈥渂etter than the bestest thing in the whole wide world鈥, to 鈥渟eeing the
unmediated divine essence face to face 鈥 But what I actually see, in my mind鈥檚
eye, is Pongo, my sausage dog, scampering towards me through a field, lush with
buttercups, to the sound of Joe Smooth singing Promised Land. 听听
And that鈥檚 a tricky one for a Christian priest, for our doctrine maintains that
the gates of pearl open only for the saved, and that to be saved we require a
soul, and that dogs have no souls, and therefore no place in heaven.
The animals entered Noah鈥檚
ark two by two, the lions, giraffes and the sausage dogs. Rescued from the
flood which devastated all the earth, surely that indicates that they too are
saved; not only saved but, like us, saved for eternity?
Arguments rage, and as a dog lover I know which side I tend to; but I feel for
that Vicar. Trying to give good news - a place in heaven awaits you -
inadvertently bad news is given - but not one for your dog - an absence so
outrageous to the lady it makes heaven itself seem uninhabitable.
Or unimaginable. Picturing heaven defeats us; even the great Renaissance
painter Botticelli gave up, resorting in the end to geometry. And the imagery
that we use, of green fields, and bright lights, and Great Aunt Betty
leaping over the clover, is no more accurate a representation of heaven than my
Sat Nav鈥檚 version of the M6/M1 interchange. 听
Our grasp of what lies beyond will always be uncertain; but of this I am
certain. Nothing good is ever lost; and the love of dog, which surpasses
understanding, will be fully returned in the place beyond loss and fear and
grief.
