In seven days' time, people in the republic will go the the polls and answer a question which requires a yes or no answer. If they vote Yes, it means they want a change to the 8th Amendment of the Constitution which states that the pregnant mother and the foetus have the same rights, and it's only if a mother's life is at risk that an abortion is allowed. If they vote No, it means that they want to keep the law as it is. What the ultimate outcome of this referendum will be, we don't know. What we do know is that abortion is a complex, sensitive and deeply personal subject; both difficult and divisive with the strongest of feelings on both sides. This debate has spanned more than three decades in the Republic after the Eighth Amendment was approved by referendum on the 7th of September 1983.
