Pause for Thought
Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:
Ìý
A few days ago, I paid a visit to a woman who is serving time in a high-security prison.Ìý To my surprise, it was a memorable experience, one that I’ve thought a lot about since.
Ìý
It’s 20 years since I visited a prison.Ìý I’m not one of the team of dedicated prison chaplains, so it’s not on my usual beat.Ìý But I went this time because I know the woman – let’s call her Jane – and after writing to her a few times, I realised that she’d appreciate a visit.
Ìý
I was warned that the security would be a big deal – it took 45 minutes to get past searches, x-ray machines, finger-printing, metal detectors and air-locks.Ìý I was spared the mouth-search for drugs, but other visitors seemed to know that drill too.Ìý And a shout-out to the security guard who wouldn’t let me in because he thought my first name is rabbi!
Ìý
Once I was finally in the visitors’ area, it was an overwhelmingly positive experience.Ìý The prisoners were mostly jolly, delighted to see their family and friends.Ìý I was struck by their ordinariness – some were inside for the most serious and horrific crimes, yet they seemed unremarkable.
Ìý
But I was most struck by Jane’s approach to life and her situation.Ìý She has had a very tough life, yet she was amazingly optimistic about her experience in prison and hopeful about her future after her eventual release.Ìý Jane was able to discuss how she has developed as a human being while inside and, most impressive of all, she was able to say something positive about everyone she’s met there, even hardened criminals.
Ìý
On reflection, I should have known that inspiration can come from unexpected places.Ìý In the second century, Rabbi Ben Azzai said, ‘don’t disparage anyone, nor reject anything; for there is no-one who doesn’t have their moment and nothing without a purpose.’Ìý Ben Azzai makes a simple, powerful point – every human being, whoever they are, whatever they’ve done, has his or her ‘moment’ – a vital role that cannot be fulfilled by anyone else.Ìý And in the same vein, Rabbi Ben Zoma said, ‘who is wise? Someone who learns from everyone.’
Ìý
Visiting Jane has certainly challenged some of my assumptions and, I admit, prejudices.Ìý I had visited to support her, but unexpectedly, she inspired me.Ìý
