Kinship carers, Happy teenagers
Are girls with autism and ADHD getting the support that they need? And is it possible to be a happy teen? Presented by Jane Garvey.
Are girls with autism or ADHD getting the learning support they need? Dr Jo Toovey is today proposing a motion at the annual conference of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers that more research is needed into the identification and support of female learners with neurodiversity (Autism Spectrum Condition and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). She joins Jane to explain why this is a particular issue for girls.
Soprano Jane Manning was part of the first concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall back in 1967 . She talks to Jane about her career and her contribution to 'Concrete Dreams'; an exhibition that's opening at the Southbank Centre to celebrate its reopening. The centre's Head of archive joins her to tell us about the long line of women who've performed and worked there .
94% of carers looking after their relatives' children say it has caused them financial hardship. And 9 in 10 kinship carers are women - that's all according to new research from Grandparents Plus and the Family Rights Group. Jane speaks to one grandmother who was forced to give up her job to care for her grandchildren.
How can you be a happy teen when your body is changing, your periods are starting (or not), relationships are complicated and everyone seems to be having a better time that you are? Jane is joined by Sophie Elkan, author of 'The Girls' Guide to Growing Up Great,' and Dr David Bainbridge a vet and author of 'Teenagers - A Natural History' to talk about how parents can best support their children.
