Plus there's thirty minutes of uplifting music in the Half Wower with Tuesday tunes from the likes of *NSYNC, Gloria Estefan and the Spice Girls. Karthi Gnanasegaram is joined in the Sports Locker by retired American sprinting legend Michael Johnson and we have an academic-themed Pause For Thought from newcomer Reverend Matt Woodcock.

Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

Matt Woodcock, Church of England Pioneer Minister and Mission Supporter in the Diocese of York:

Delivering sermons week after week, you learn to cope with a lot.

The screaming toddlers. The loud snorers. And sometimes, at midnight mass usually, - the sozzled hecklers. I鈥檝e learnt to plough on, though. Stay unruffled. That was until the other Sunday during a guest preach at a local church.聽 I spotted a face I hadn鈥檛 seen for 32 years. Mrs Crosby. My old primary school maths teacher. The Mrs Crosby whose lessons I often ruined with bad behaviour.聽 It ruffled me.

She hadn鈥檛 changed. Same poise. Same hair. Same eyes that still seemed to demand an answer to unfathomable fractions. 聽 Call it a move of the Spirit or a leave of my senses, but I stopped the sermon and walked nervously over to her pew.聽 Kneeling down and taking her hand, I poured out an apology of Biblical proportions.聽 For all my tantrums, disruptions and rubber fights. For the rude noises I made under my armpit. For the love notes I smuggled to Gaynor Pickles when I should have been subtracting. The list went on.聽聽

鈥淲ill you forgive me Mrs Crosby?鈥 I asked finally. She smiled. Told me to stop being silly and get on with my work. Just like she used to actually.聽 I now see how much I learnt from her. Not much maths, admittedly - despite her best efforts. But lessons in kindness, warmth and saintly patience.聽聽

I鈥檓 discovering that we鈥檙e all teachers to some degree. That we鈥檙e constantly learning from each other in the course of our daily interactions.聽 My faith inspires me to learn from the one who called himself 鈥楾eacher鈥. To strive to follow Christ鈥檚 example. Or 鈥楧o as I have done for you鈥, as he put it to his pupils at the Last Supper. Not just speaking words of love, mercy and service - but putting them into action.聽 Before she left, Mrs Crosby took out a carefully preserved envelope that she鈥檇 brought to show me. It was the 鈥榯hank you鈥 card I presented to her on my last day at school.聽 I鈥檇 written: 鈥楾hank you for being really neat Mrs Crosby!鈥櫬 Perhaps it didn鈥檛 quite atone for my multitude of classroom sins. But it did bring joy to a wonderful teacher.聽 And has taught her former pupil that our little gestures of appreciation can often go a very long way.
