Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:

We are in the middle of Passover, the great festival of liberation.听 We had exhausting but wonderful celebrations last weekend and now a few quiet days with family.听 The children are off school and we鈥檝e been on some lovely outings.

Tomorrow night, it all kicks off again with the final festival days of Passover.听 Every holiday has a theme 鈥 and this one is all about love and connection.听 On Friday, in synagogues around the world, the account will be read of how God brought the Israelites through the Red Sea just a few days after their Exodus from Egypt.

One day, little Gemma鈥檚 mum asked what she鈥檇 learned at Bible class.听 She replied that the teacher told us how God sent Moses behind enemy lines on a rescue mission to lead the Israelite people out of Egypt.听 When he got to the Red Sea, he had his army build a bridge and all the people walked across safely. Then, he radioed for reinforcements, so they sent bombers to blow up the bridge and all the Israelites were saved.听 Gemma鈥檚 mum was astonished and asked, 鈥榠s that really what your teacher taught you?鈥櫶 Gemma replied, 鈥榳ell, not exactly, but if I told it the way the teacher did, you'd never believe it!鈥

The real story is one like no other 鈥 but at root it鈥檚 about the love and connection between God and the Israelites, who were willing to step foot in the sea, confident that everything would work out for the best.

But the strongest expression of divine love appears in a short and remarkable biblical book 鈥 the Song of Songs.听 It鈥檚 a passionate and powerful love poem, which we will read this Saturday, the final day of the festival.听 The Song expresses the love between a young man and woman and the changes in their relationship.听 One of my favourite lines appears near the end of the book: 鈥楳any waters cannot quench love, rivers cannot drown it鈥.听 The song鈥檚 author imagines that love as a raging fire, one that even a flood will never extinguish.

The Song of Songs is really a parable for the power of a higher love 鈥 the unending passion between Man and God that is the greatest story of human history.听 As Passover ends, I can think of nothing better.
