Trade union rep and taxi drivers clash over moves to allow private hire taxis into bus lanes
A trade union has claimed a move to allow Belfast's private hire taxis to use bus lanes will compromise public transport.
A trade union has claimed a move to allow Belfast's private hire taxis to use bus lanes will compromise public transport. Last week the Department of Infrastructure announced that the taxis will be permitted to use the Belfast Rapid Transit bus lanes in east and west Belfast and the 12-hour city centre lanes for the next year. Davy Thompson from Unite, which represents some bus drivers, told the Irish News that it would lead to a "very significant and adverse impact on the travelling public". Stephen spoke to Davy this morning and also got the views of taxi drivers Ken and Peter.
Also, are MLAs about to get their pay cut? This week Secretary of State Karen Bradley is expected to announce if she'll accept an independent report which recommended a reduction in MLA salaries. DUP's Sammy Wilson wants payments made to Sinn Fein MPs to be reduced if MLA pay is cut. Stephen got the views of former assistant chief constable Alan McQuillan, SDLP deputy leader Nichola Mallon and commentator Brendan Mulgrew.
And, Jamie Carragher has apologised after a video showed the former England and Liverpool defender spitting towards a girl in a car from his own vehicle. The 40-year-old, now a television pundit for Sky Sports, had been covering his former side's 2-1 defeat by Manchester United on Saturday. The video, obtained by the Mirror, shows Carragher react by spitting at a car after being "goaded" as he described it. He said he was "totally out of order" and has apologised to the family. A Sky Sports spokesperson said: "It's unacceptable behaviour and we will be addressing it with Jamie." Stephen got reaction from former Chelsea and Everton player now pundit Pat Nevin and Belfast Telegraph's Jim Gracey.
