Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

Ìý

I’ve never really had much luck with horses, riding them I mean. It all started badly on holiday in France when I was 12 and a day out trekking in the hills. The horse refused to bend to my will and I spent most of the time cajoling, pulling and pleading with while it ate a hedgerow. Years later back in the saddle again I took a firm hand, this time the horse was a different creature altogether, objected to my authority and with one tug of the rein I found myself charging off into the distance. Later the instructor assured me that really was just a canter but it certainly felt like a gallop to me! My thighs were chaffed and my heart was racing, I quite liked it.

Ìý

So today at Cheltenham I’m very happy to leave it to the professionals, and what professionals they are! The race is fast and the jumps are high and to do what they do takes courage, determination and a little bit of crazy. And that’s just the horses.

Ìý

Many young people and children need the same qualities of bravery and fortitude to face the challenges in their lives. For some of them the jumps are too high, the race too long and they need a helping hand, and that’s where Children in Need and your generous and kind donations come in. Of course you bidders are getting a good deal too, a day to remember, but for all who give, no matter the amount, there’s a thrill to be had that exceeds that felt by those stood at the winning post today. The thrill of knowing you’ve made a difference, changed the world for someone you may never know, in ways you can never tell, as the great Christian writer John Bunyan said ‘You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.’

Ìý

So whether you back the first past the post today or not, you generous lot all deserve a gold cup, because you can bet with your help, Children in Need is making sure those who children and young people who need it most will get over the jumps they face and win their race.

Ìý

Thank you for your generosity, have a wonderful day, now does anyone have a tip they’re willing to share?
